Glazed Stoneware Rectangular Plate is a Glazed stoneware work by Toshiko Takaezu, a ceramic.
Toshiko Takaezu (1922–2011) was a pivotal figure in postwar American studio ceramics. Of Japanese-Hawaiian heritage and trained at Cranbrook, she is best known for her 'closed forms' — sealed, rounded vessels that abandon function for a meditative, almost sculptural presence, their surfaces glazed like abstract paintings.
The piece reflects the qualities that make Toshiko Takaezu's ceramics sought after today: a distinctive decorative vocabulary, secure documentation, and the marriage of a recognised artistic hand with the ceramic medium.
