About the work
Vase, décor D742 (stylised butterflies), form F806 is a Glazed earthenware, craquelé ground with cloisonné-style enamels work by Charles Catteau, referenced D. 742, created in c. 1925. It measures 28 x 15 cm (11 x 5 in).
Catteau drew on Egyptian, African and naturalist sources — leaping deer, gazelles, birds and geometric friezes — rendered in the crackle-glazed grès Keramis for which the La Louvière factory became celebrated across Europe in the interwar years.
The piece reflects the qualities that make Charles Catteau's ceramics sought after today: a distinctive decorative vocabulary, secure documentation, and the marriage of a recognised artistic hand with the ceramic medium.
